Kevin Atwater "Achilles" Literary Collection
Read "Love in the Time of M14s: The Ballad of a Boy and his Gun" as part of the Kevin Atwater "Achilles" Literary Collection. This flash fiction piece is part of a series of literary pieces featured with songs on Kevin Atwater's debut album. Five of the literary pieces were collaborations between Kevin Atwater and his favorite authors and six of the pieces were fan submissions, selected by Kevin and his team to represent the remaining songs. This piece in particular tells the life story of a military man who grew up in the 1940s, shoving down his queerness and the violence that came from it, paired with the song, "Call of Duty."

"Eternally cursed with a never-ending hunger, you have fought long and hard to resist the urge to drink human blood. This meant never staying in the same place for too long and never getting attached to anyone. The journey has been a long one, to say the least.
Desperate for a place to rest your aching feet and a meal to quench the unquenchable, you find temporary refuge at a pub at the edge of town that reeks of rat droppings and day-old vomit. Your relief is short-lived, though, stunted by the presence of a vampire hunter sitting beside you at the bar.
Navigating through conversation steeped with fear, friendship, and fatal attraction may be the only way left to keep your head.
Will you be strong enough to fight your primal urges or will you give in to your desire? Perhaps, in more ways than one?"
